The economic downturn has put stress on countless marraiges.  However, when couples feel its time to divorce, many are surprised to find it will not fit in to their budget. According to NPR:

"The B.E. Journal of Economic Analysis and Policy shows that as unemployment rises, the divorce rate goes down: For every 1 percent increase in the unemployment rate, the divorce rate goes down by 1 percent." (NPR)

Many people considering divorce and dealing with financial stress or unemployment hold on to their unhappy marriages believeing that it is a terrible time to make a major change, however positive the end result may be.  The financial hardship outweighs the desire to move on with their lives.

Mediation provides an option to many people with minimal funds.

Many of my clients come to me with the goal of settling their divorce in an efficient and affordable manner. The mediation process is a constructive and efficient way to reach a positive settlement agreement without the long and costly legal battle.

Mediation allows the clients to stay in control of their own divorce. They are not at the mercy of a Judge or the court system.  In mediation negotiations, both spouses have veto power and have the freedom to customize their decisions in order to find a mutually agreeable solution. They also have the power to decide how many sessions they need to sort out their lives and prepare to file.

There are still many people who do not know this option is out there.  What are your thoughts on the economy and divorce?
